Insulated Containers - An Alteranative to Refrigerated Trucks for Food Transport
A premium Melbourne bakery with more than a handful of retail stores produce and deliver cakes pastries, bread and savories as well as ice cream.
For them quality, is of paramount importance when delivering their products. Goods must be kept at a constant + 0 to 4 degrees Celsius and for their ice-cream - 18oC at all times.
Rather than use expensive refrigered trucks, this bakery chain chose Olivo insulated containers to transport pastries and ice cream to their retail stores in Melbourne and Sydney. These state of the art polyurethane insulated shipping containers provide temperature controlled environments to preserve your chilled and frozen food during transportation.
The benefits of insulated containers versus refridgerated trucks:
The benefits for them were the ability to transport chilled, frozen and ambient goods in a non refrigerated truck resulting in significant cost savings on trucks and delivery consolidation.
The insulated containers were fitted with wheels making them a very convenient and safe way of handling goods. Lifting heavy boxes was no longer an OHS issue.
The shipping containers were easily wheeled into fridges or freezers to be loaded with product and then wheeled onto the truck.
Once reaching the destination they were wheeled off and taken directly to the storage area for unloading – minimizing the thermal exposure to the product and maintaining the cold chain.
The bakery also found that additional stock could be stored in the insulated containers until space became available in the chilled display cabinets later in the day thus increasing the quantity of product available for sale.
How Olivo Insulated Containers Work:
The containers are insulted units without mechanical refrigeration.
Eutectic refrigeration (eutectic plates) is used which allows the required inner temperature to be maintained during transportation and storage from order assembly until unloading at the delivery point.
Product quality was maintained along the cold chain as the insulated containers are simply wheeled from the coolroom onto the truck then at the point of delivery wheeled off and through the shopping centre to the retail outlet where the product is transfered directly into the fridges and freezers.
Depending on the ambient temperature, the internal temperature can be maintained for as long as 2 - 3 days.
Companies use the Bac55 container for small order deliveries.
The container can be opened as many as 20 times to retrieve individual orders and still maintain the internal temperature 0 to 4 degree C.
Each container can be used for either chilled or frozen goods with the change of Eutectic Plate types.
The insulating capacity of the container walls minimizes the heat transfer between the exterior and the interior of the container, protecting your product from temperature fluctuations.
